The courtyard Karthuizerhof was built in 1650 on the site of the medieval Carthusian monastery, designed by city architect Daniel Stalpaert. It was for that time a large complex. In this court were housed widows who were under the care of the House Sitting Masters, poor relief of the 17th century. In practice, it was not just widows, but also to unmarried mothers with children.

Karthuizer courtyards is mentioned after the Karthuizer monastry, founded in 1392 long before the Jordaan in amsterdam arised.
